Joseph Edward Cummings

Joseph Edward Cummings “Joe” died peacefully at home in Arlington, MA on January 23, 2024 at the age of 94.

Joe was born in Cambridge, MA on December 1, 1929, the son of the late Marie (Harrity) and Howard J. Cummings. He graduated from Belmont High School in 1946.  He attended Northeastern University before serving in the US Navy for two years.

Joe and his beloved wife of 50 years, Margaret (Heavey) Cummings, loved to travel, entertain, spend time with family and friends and laugh. Joe took impeccable care of his home and belongings and devoted much time to caring for his elder relatives. He made anyone in his presence feel special.

Joe worked primarily in finance for the United Jewish Appeal, Fisher Scientific and the Arlington/Cambridge Savings Bank. In his retirement, until the age of 80, he loved working at Harvard, proctoring exams and registering students in Winthrop House for classes.

Along with his wife, Joe is pre-deceased by his brothers Howard Cummings and Arthur Cummings and his sister Mary (Cummings) Hunter. He is survived by his brother-in-law Kenneth Heavey and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Joe's Funeral will be from the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home 52 Trapelo Rd. Belmont Saturday at 9:15 a.m. Funeral Mass Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at St. Camillus Church 1185 Concord Turnpike, Arlington. Visiting hours will be held Friday 6 – 8 p.m. at the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, in honor of Margaret’s battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, contributions in Joe’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association 309 Waverley Oaks Rd. Waltham, MA 02452 (www.alz.org).

Joe will be laid to rest with his beloved Margaret at St. John’s Cemetery located at 388 Parker Rd. in Lancaster, MA.
