PARKMAN, Mary K. S. of Cambridge, died on November 22, 2017 after a long battle with illness.  She is survived by her sister, Margaret Lincoln of Cambridge; her brother, Jonathan Simonds of Dedham; her daughter, Molly French and her husband, Alan C. French of Aiken, South Carolina; her son, Sam Parkman and his wife, Jennifer Greeley of Newton; her grandchildren, Timothy French and his wife, Amanda; Robin and Jennifer French; and Alida and Emily Parkman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She graduated from the Winsor School and Smith College and was married for 54 years to Sam Parkman.  She worked in education in Claremont, California; Lake Forest, Illinois; Bedford, New York; and New York City before retiring to Cambridge.
In her later years, until she was no longer able, she loved nothing more than visiting with and helping care for her grandchildren as they grew.  They loved this arrangement as much as she did.  Even in her last few years when she was unable to walk, she regaled visitors and friends with her quick wit and keen insight.  She was a person of remarkable empathy, coming to learn all of the details of the people in her life from her family to her caregivers.  As one of her grand-nieces said “she knew what was going on with you, and in her own way, could make you feel as if you were the only one who mattered.” Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to  attend  Mary’s visiting hours in the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, 52 Trapelo Road, BELMONT, Thursday, November 30 from 5-8 p.m. A family memorial service is being planned in the spring.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory to the Caregroup Parmenter Hospice, One Arsenal Marketplace, Watertown, MA 02472 or the Society of St. John the Evangelist, Cambridge, MA., would be sincerely appreciated.   www.swdfuneralhome.com
