Alfred Rubin Obituary

Rubin, Alfred P. 83, of Belmont died peacefully at home on November 30. He leaves behind Susanne, his loving wife of 54 years, three beloved children, Conrad, Anna and Naomi, five grandchildren, and his brother, Sander. Mr. Rubin was a professor of public international law at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University until 2002. He received his B.A. (1952) and J.D. (1957) from Columbia University. While at Columbia Mr. Rubin was a nationally ranked foil fencer. His studies were interrupted by three years of military service in the Navy during the Korean War. Upon completing his J.D., Mr. Rubin attended Jesus College at Cambridge University for post-graduate studies, completing an M. Litt. He began his career in 1961 as a legal advisor to the Defense Department advancing to the position of Director of Trade Control in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. In 1967, Mr. Rubin took an appointment at the University of Oregon Law School where he taught until joining the faculty of the Fletcher School in 1973. A private burial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association (apdama.org).
