Barbara Hollar Gallant, graduate of Radford college, office manager, school teacher, community volunteer, and mother, died on Wednesday at the Leonard Florence Center For Living in Chelsea, MA. She was 79 years old. She had struggled with Parkinson disease for the last years of her life. She had received strong support from her family and community, particularly her husband Bob Gallant who has been her constant companion. Barbara was born in the rural Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to Russell and Virginia Hollar. Though she lived in suburban Belmont for most of her adult life, she treasured her country roots and was an avid gardener and enjoyed cooking the foods she had grown up with. She majored in History at Radford College in Radford Virginia, graduating in 1958, but she really enjoyed mathematics, teaching mathematics after graduating and later working as an office manager. She met her future husband while they were both working for Deco Electronics in Cambridge, MA. They moved to Belmont and became very active in the town. Barbara particularly enjoyed participation in Plymouth Congregational Church. Following retirement, she and Bob traveled extensively in Europe and Asia. She is survived by her husband Robert Gallant, son Stuart Gallant of Belmont, MA, and daughter Ellen Gallant of Jackson Hole, WY. A memorial service will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church, 580 Pleasant St., Belmont, Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 10 a.m.
