Charles Anthony Smith (Tony) went home to the Lord on June 16, 2025 at the age of 83 years, after a long courageous battle with several health issues. Tony was the son of Charles A. Smith and Mathell Burham. He was born in Washington DC on April 19 1942. Tony was the beloved companero of 30 years of Jose David Ovalle. He leaves his sister Jamie and brother-in-law Stephen Luebbehusen, as well as many close friends. Tony earned a bachelor of arts from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964. The following year, he earned a master of arts from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He earned his PhD from Harvard University's Government Department. Tony was a professor of political science at Tufts University where he spent 46 years of his professional life. He retired from Tufts in 2020, at which time he became Emeritus. A prolific writer of books on Ethnic Groups and American Foreign Policy, on British, American, and French Imperialism and Communist Theories of State Legitimacy in the Soviet Union, China and Cuba. Tony was beloved by students for his enormous generosity and keen mentorship. Tony loved diverse cultures, international food and traveling around the world. His favorite countries were France and Guatemala which he called his second home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mil Milagros Inc.
