Claire A. Smith of Belmont passed away peacefully in the presence of family on February 3. She was the daughter of the late Dr. T. Blake and Catherine (Ward) Smith. She is survived by sister Lorraine LoGrande and husband Michael of The Villages, FL, brother R. Blake Smith of Belmont, and brother Raymond Smith and wife Dianne of Searsport, ME. She is also survived by niece Michele Bongiorno and husband John of Fairhope, AL, nephew Michael LoGrande and wife Colleen of Alexandria, VA, nephew John LoGrande and wife Magdalena of Tampa, FL, niece Kate Smith and wife Michelle Grohe of Jamaica Plain, niece Kimberly Smith of Dorchester, niece Erin Brown and husband Justin of Brighton, and nephew Tiernan Smith and wife Sonja Gjokaj of Milton, as well as ten grandnephews and grandnieces.
Claire was a 1954 graduate of Notre Dame Academy (Granby Street), and a 1958 graduate of Emmanuel College. She served as Executive Secretary to the Administrator of McLean Hospital, Belmont from 1958 to 1979, and was the Retirement Administrator for the Town of Arlington from 1979 until 1998.
For years she was an active member of the Massachusetts Rhododendron Society, and a dedicated research volunteer at the Massachusetts State Archives. She was also a member of her parish Social Justice Ministry.
One way her love of family was expressed was through her passion for genealogy. She actively researched the history of her family and the families of friends who were dear to her. Her research took her to Ireland, Nova Scotia and Utah and she spent innumerable hours gathering information online. At a family reunion she presented each of the 61 people present with their personal genealogy—a gift each will treasure forever.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 10 at 10:30am in St. Joseph Church, 130 Common Street, Belmont. Interment will be at Village Cemetery, Searsport, Maine in the Spring. www.swdfuneralhome.com
