David Ernst Obituary

David Ernst, of Watertown, MA, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Jean Ernst, and his children Carolyn Ernst (Olivier Barnouin) of Maryland, and Julie Bruno (Joe) of Virginia. He is also survived by five beloved grandchildren, Vivian and Rose Barnouin, and Andrew, Will, and Samantha Bruno. He was predeceased by his parents Harry Ernst and Alice (Heaney) Ernst, and his brother Harry Ernst, Jr.

A lifelong resident of Watertown, David attended Watertown Public Schools and graduated from Northeastern University. After serving two tours in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, he spent his career working for the Massachusetts Racing Commission.

David is fondly remembered by his family for his famous tacos and for his ability to fix almost anything.  He always had the right tool on hand for any occasion, even when traveling to visit his children and grandchildren. Anyone who knew him will remember  he never missed an opportunity to tell a joke or a well-timed pun. Selfless and humble, David leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and humor.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend David’s visitation at the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, 52 Trapelo Road, Belmont, on Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. His family will hold a private celebration of David’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in David’s memory can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
