Katharine (Kitty) Weeks died peacefully on June 1, 2023 at the age of 100. Kitty lived her life in Belmont and, along with her husband, John, raised seven children and instilled the importance of integrity and sense of responsibility. She valued kindness over all other attributes, helping others whenever she could. Kitty loved to travel and spent half of every year in Cuba in the 1940s and 1950s, where John was managing a sugar and cattle business. There, she was well known for her generous spirit, sense of fun and inclusion of the local community. Those attributes carried over to her many years in Belmont where she hosted neighborhood events that generated fond memories.
Gardening was where Kitty found contentment and solitude. Kitty spent decades enjoying friends affiliated with the Belmont Garden Club and served as its President from 1976 to 1978. As a master gardener, she created Colonial style gardens at the Weeks Brick House Association in Greenland, NH and at the Maria Mitchell House in Nantucket, MA. Shortly after, she published “Gardening with New England Colonial Plants,” which focused on their history, uses and culture and was illustrated by her daughter, Marnie Sinclair. Later in life, Kitty retired with John to Marco Island, Florida where she created her last and most memorable botanical garden. Protection and beautification of nature was a life-long passion. Her remarkable commitment and endless energy as a wife, parent and gardener will always be remembered fondly.
In 1966, Kitty and John founded the Belmont Hill Club with a small band of friends. Today, the club continues to thrive with tennis and swim facilities. She was always active in the world of sports, teaching her children how to sail, play tennis and croquet and supporting her boys’ athletic teams at virtually every game played.
Kitty was happily married to John for 71 years and leaves seven children; Katharine & Ken White of Falmouth, MA, Martha Sinclair of Damariscotta, ME, John & Patricia Weeks of Marblehead, MA, David & Marie Weeks of Ellicott City, MD, Sinclair & Julia Weeks of Belmont, MA, Steve & Mary Weeks of Belmont, MA, Bob & Penny Weeks of Arlington, MA, eighteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.
