Obituary

Mary Ann Moran

Longtime Santa Monica resident Mary Ann Moran, 75, passed away on Tuesday, June 21th, 2021 at Belmont Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Belmont, Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Steve Corry.
Mary was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, one of four children of a city engineer and a schoolteacher. The family split their time between a row house in the Bay Ridge neighborhood and a bungalow in the beach enclave of Breezy Point, a treasured place to which Mary would return often throughout her life.
Mary graduated from Saint Saviour High School in Brooklyn and received her bachelor’s degree in English from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York and a Master of Arts in Teaching English from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. She would later go on to earn a Doctorate in Education from the University of California Los Angeles. Mary made education her life’s work, first as a teacher and later as an administrator of several middle and high schools, and as Vice-Principal of Palisades High School in Los Angeles.
Mary first met Steve Corry through mutual friends in New York while she was a student at LeMoyne. After college Mary followed friends to Los Angeles and settled there, and it was there that she and Steve reconnected, fell in love and were married. Mary and Steve lived a full and adventurous life together, traveling extensively and enjoying an active L.A. lifestyle.
Mary’s many hobbies included tai chi, ocean swimming, body boarding, cycling, Nordic walking, reading and gardening. She was also an avid runner and participated in many races, including several marathons in Los Angeles and throughout the country. Mary played the recorder with both flute and ballet folklorico groups, and served as a longtime volunteer docent at the Annenberg Community Beach House historic site. Mary and Steve’s door was always open to friends and served as a hub for both Corry and Moran relatives.
Mary was a lifelong Catholic and a member of Saint Monica Church in Santa Monica, where she was involved as a greeter and a reader. She also exemplified a Catholic spirit of service through activities like Sierra Club service trips and a Habitat for Humanity trip to post-Katrina New Orleans.
In 2020, Mary moved to Brookline, Mass. to be closer to family, but her heart remained on the West Coast.
Mary was the daughter of Martin J. Moran II and Marie Moran, both deceased. She was predeceased by brother Martin Moran III and is survived by brother Hugh Moran and sister Alice McGovern, as well as many nephews, nieces, and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held in summer or fall 2021 in Santa Monica. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Heal the Bay (https://healthebay.org/donate/) or the Saint Monica Catholic Community (https://www.givecentral.org/location/1176/event/27698).
