Susanne Rubin died peacefully in her home in Silver Spring, MD on January 18. She leaves behind loving children, grandchildren, and siblings. She was born in Berlin, Germany on February 18, 1940 and spent her childhood in Germany with her brother, Jochen Frowein, and sisters Renate (Vulpius) and Katharine (Preuss). Her childhood was marred by WWII and illness, but she chose not to dwell on these hardships.
As a young adult, she traveled to Cambridge, England, where she met an American graduate student, Alfred Rubin, who shared her love of music, nature, and adventure. They were married in 1960 in Graz, Austria, and boarded a ship to sail to America soon afterwards.
Family was central to everything she did, and Susanne placed her husband and three children at the heart of her life. The Rubin family moved to Belmont in 1973 from Eugene, Oregon, when Alfred Rubin joined the faculty of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. For 46 years, Susanne enjoyed the rich community of Belmont and took part in music programs, assisted with local school activities, and was a lifelong member of the League of Women Voters. She loved walking through Belmont’s neighborhoods and especially enjoyed the Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary. She and Alfred treasured days spent exploring the natural beauty of New England, particularly Cape Cod.
Susanne is preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her siblings, and her children: Conrad Rubin (New York), Anna Rubin (Vermont), and Naomi Rubin DeVeaux (Maryland); 5 grandchildren: Maxine, Jeremy, Benjamin, Malachi, and Moses; and many nieces, nephews, and friends in the US and Germany.
A private burial service is planned. If you would like to make a donation in Susanne's memory, please consider contributions to the Habitat Education Center & Wildlife Sanctuary (https://www.massaudubon.org/get-outdoors/wildlife-sanctuaries/habitat) or the Lewy Body Dementia Research Center of Excellence (http://med.stanford.edu/poston-lab/LBD.html#support_our_research).
